MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
SWEDISH
For relaxation and stress. Involves a combination of long sweeping massage
strokes and gentle kneading.
REIKI
Hands are placed over the patient in various positions, from head to toe.
Each position is held for 3/5 minutes (or as long as may be necessary).
No pressure is exerted, making REIKI an ideal treatment for the very
young, elderly, disabled, pregnant women and those recovering from
surgery.
LOMILOMI
Hawaiian form of bodywork incorporates the spirituality of the Islands
with profoundly effective massage techniques that wash over the body
like waves of the ocean. The massage uses forearms and elbows for
most of the strokes, which are sequenced to connect the whole body
from tip of toes to tip of fingers. Stimulating and relaxing at the same
time, this is fairly deep work that results in a vigorous flush of the
lymphatic system. Great for athletes and full figured people.
ROLFING
Aligns the major body segments through deep manipulation of the fascia
(connective tissue) of the body to restore the body's natural alignment
and balance.
SHIATSU
Holding pressure for 3-5 seconds on specific body points stimulates vital
energy. Highly effective in relieving muscle tension.
REFLEXOLOGY
Stimulation of particular points on the surface of the body has an effect
on other areas or organs of the body. This technique focuses mainly on
the hands and feet.
SPORTS MASSAGE
Method of massage especially designed to prepare an athlete for an
upcoming event and to aid in the body's regenerative and restorative
capacities following a rigorous workout or competition. This is achieved
through specialized manipulations that stimulate circulation of the blood.
ESALEN
Long, lengthening strokes with gentle rocking and stretching, passive
joint movement.
TRIGGER POINT
Concentrated finger pressure to "trigger points" (painful irritated areas in
muscles) to break cycles of spasm and pain. Trigger points are tender,
congested spots in muscle tissue that may radiate pain to other areas.
Similar to shiatsu or acupressure.
CRANIAL SACRAL
Scalp and forehead massage and pressure point treatment. Helps relieve
stress, headaches, and sinus problems.
CALIFORNIAN
Soft flowing finger-tip touch over the entire body that soothes and
relaxes.
KNEADING
Squeezing of the muscles and "Karate chops" to relieve stress and
increase blood flow.
Long and short strokes using the knuckles. Stretches the muscle and
tissue in a kneading fashion. Releases flow of energy.
THUMBS
Used in pressure-point and to concentrate on individual knots and
tightness. Allows me to manipulate and break up knots.
(Not enough therapists use this beneficial technique.)
ELBOWS
Used on buttocks and trouble spots. Allows me to attack a wider area of
the muscle or knot while going deeper.
